Dr. Charles Hedbring [STEPPE C] would be more than happy to share
free copies of his "FACTS+". It's a 1O-module curriculum that grew out
of a federal research grant while he was at Columbia. (See the 1985 J.
of Autism & Dev Dis for a published article.) For nearly 1O years he has
used/tested/disseminated the software in many NYC schools and in
Australia & New Zealand. It won a national award in 1990. Teachers &
parents of mentally handicapped children are free to contact me for a
free copy of the software. Mail to STEPPE C. Subj: Re: Teaching Sp. Ed. vs.

This is a question to anyone who might have some insight on some of the major
differences between teaching a special education classroom versus teaching in
a regular classroom. I have worked with special ed. kids for four years now
and am a Junior in Elem. Ed. I have experience with the basic differences in
the classroom, but I am just the teaching assistant. I would like to talk
with someone who has taught both and could give me some insight. Which
classroom allows you to be the most fulfilled as a teacher.Subj: Re:

I have taught special education for 23 years with a wide variety of special
needs children. I have also taught regular curriculum . I have a wonderful
teaching assistant at this time and we are constantly working with the
regular classroom teachers in modifying the students work (k-6) in a Content
Mastery/Resource classroom. I think that working as a classroom teacher is
more fullfilling because, you can meet the individual needs of each child.
It is very exciting to teaching the variety of content areas and still zero
in on the strenghts and weaknesses of each child. We use the computers
quite a bit in the learning center as well as peer tutoring . Let's stay in
touch. I am also doing alot of research on legal issues for special
education and how it impacts the classroom, community and parents. Here in
Texas, the legislature just reeconvened this week, and we are rewriting the
Texas education code and special needs will be addressed.Subj: RE: Apple

I am trying to collect some information for a missionary family who will be
returning on furlough to the Pasadena, CA area for about 6 months, arriving

Also, how about support groups in the area with interests in the Feingold

I am currently working in New York State and am wondering how other
therapists have encouraged spoken language with students with Autism or
Autistic-like behaviors. Are there tried and true techniques of which I am
not aware that could help me facilitate voicing or speech in students who
have strengths in receptive language, gestures, and sign? I am very
enthusiastic about the potential that I have seen in my students and want to
give them the most that I can. I just need some more information. Can
anyone help? Thanks. Subj: Re:Speech Therapist needs help

I suggest you key in on things important to the child (food, books, videos,
whatever). Teach them the purpose of communication using signs or a picture
board (one thing at a time). The reward of communication to the child will
be to get what they really love faster than waiting all day. With signs or
picture boards, you can motor the child through it until s/he gets the idea.
Once they understand the beauty of communication, it becomes more meaningful
to communicate.Subj: Help.Boston Higashi School.

can speak some words, but then always limited in the extent of it...or they
are non-verbal..
Despite the problems with expressive...I seem to think that you have
discovered their receptive is always higher.
There are no TRIED and TRUE methods, but I hope that you will explore the
augmentative and alternative means through high and/or low tech.

Carol,
I attended your reading presentation and your impromptu presentation on FC.
My daughter (6 this month) is learning to read--about 40 words. Although she
knows phonics, her auditory processing is so poor she does not know how to
use them. She is very visual and her memory is great, so we are using sight
reading. We are very pleased.
I have never been thrilled with FC, but your view of FC is very reasonable
and opened my eyes. Somehow, it was hard for me to accept that EVERY child
could magically do this overnight and it makes much more sense that it's the
result of a lot of dedicated, hard work.
By the way, Pamela also types on the computer in DOS to call up her favorite
program. We initially made cards to help her remember the spelling. She no
longer needs them and spells words like sammy, millie, busytown, etc. Very
exciting!!
Thanks for your inspiration last July.

The premise behind the Picture Exchange communication system is to make the
child an active particiapant in the communication process from the outset.
It uses the Mayer Johnson pictures velcroed to a communication board. Once a
list of motivating objects or activities are identified for the child the
corresponding pictures are made available to the child. The child is taught
to choose and exchange the picture for the desired activity. It was
originated by the Deleware Autistic Project who use it with great success.
From what I understand, they run workshops and are very willing to share
information.Subj: Re:Picture Exchange Comm. System

My son, almost 8 yrs. old, has been a student at the DE Autistic Program
for the past three years. He will leave the program and enroll in our local
school district for the '95-'96 school year, mainly because he does not fall
into the "autistic" range on administered tests. However, during his years
at the program, he has progressed and has had much speech therapy, OT and
academic assistance.
The director of the program is Dr. Andrew Bondy. The program's address
is 144 Brennen Drive, Newark, DE 19713; and their phone number is (302)
454-2202. Although my son is verbal and thus has not used the Picture
Exchange System, I have seen other students use it with success. Hope this
information is helpful!Subj: Re:Picture Exchange Comm. System

Dear MelodyF727: Boston Higashi School is an international program serving
individuals with autism, ages 3-22. Their philosophy is based upn the
acclaimed tentes of Daily Life Therapy developed by the late Dr. Kiyo
Kitahara of Tokyo, Japan. Their holistic approach captures the essence of
humanity and reflects the sensibilities and sensitivities, the intellect and
the esthetics of humankind, attaining harmony in all aspects of life. The
method provides children with systematic education through group dynamics,
modeling and physical activity. Following the normal development patterns,
the goal of this educational approach is to enhance the individual
physically, emotionally, intellectually with the ultimate achievement of
social independence and dignity. Subj: Re: Boston Higashi School.

our 5 year old daughter is high functioning Autistic. We have been dealing
with handbiting for 3 years. We have tried various interventions ranging
from taping her hand whenever she began biting (she didn't like the way it
felt), to teaching her alternatives such as stomping her feet if she is angry
or pounding the floor or a pillow (etc). Try giving verbal ques, model his
feelings through language. Example - Say "I'm mad because I want to go
outside and I can't". This will reinforce the language of expressing
emotions. Then provide spontaneous positive reinforcement when you "catch
him" not biting his hand, or when he stops. Our daughter now rarely bites
her hand. Keep trying.Subj: Looking for a school/program

If someone could describe briefly how this program works, I think many would
find it interesting.Subj: Explanation of PECS
Date: 95-07-06 07:26:33 EDT
From: KMunster
The idea behind pecs is that the child learns that she/he can initiate the
communication, within a social context (handing a picture to another person),
and getting an immediate tangible reward. It uses pictures and a
communication board to help organize the process. It usually starts with a
person helping the child to pick up a picture ( I use a 2 x 2 black and white
picture taped to a 3 x 5 card covered with clear packaging tape to protect
the picture and it is large enough to find when thrown). The child must hand
it to the another person who can give the child the immediate reward. As the
child learns to do this the helper is eliminated and the child give the
picture to the provider without assistance; hence, the increasing
independence and control on the part of the child. It goes on for a variety
of othr steps including sentence structure. My son is now using or
verbalizing "I want popsicle to eat!" or "I want to see the Pagemaster." as
examples.
See CTamburell's note on 3/16/95 for another explanation. More info. is
available if anyone is interested. Kai MunsterSubj: Re:Explanation of PECS
